“Neon at the Starlight Diner” — Los Angeles, California (1957)
Maggie Rowe worked nights at the Starlight Diner off Route 66, where the walls were covered in pinup art commissioned from local artists. One booth featured a large pinup girl mural based on a rising pinup model named “Dixie Dawn,” painted as a glowing pinup illustration under neon lights.
Truckers swore the pinup portrait over Booth 3 brought them luck on long hauls. The diner owner never confirmed it, but he never let anyone repaint it either.
Maggie used to say the pinup art didn’t just decorate the diner—it gave it a personality that kept people coming back.
