Gil Elvgren — Brown & Bigelow Calendars (St. Paul, Minnesota, 1940s–1960s)
Artist Gil Elvgren was one of the most influential American pinup illustrators, known for his commercial work with Brown & Bigelow calendar company in St. Paul, Minnesota. His pinup art depicted playful, glamorous pinup girls in humorous everyday mishaps—skirts blowing in the wind, slipping on ladders, or caught in lighthearted accidents.
Elvgren’s pinup models were often photographed first in staged poses before being transformed into highly polished pinup illustrations. His work defined mid-century commercial pinup portrait aesthetics and remains widely collected today.
